Vacuum Casting Prototyping: A Comprehensive Guide to Silicone Mold Production and Application

Vacuum casting prototyping is a versatile method used for product replication and prototypes making across various industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, medical, toys, handicrafts, and more. The process involves creating a master model using SLA laser rapid prototyping or CNC machining, followed by silicone mold production and vacuum infusion to produce high-quality prototypes.

Silicone Mold Production

  1. Prepare silicone powder and curing agent, mix thoroughly, and set aside.

  2. Apply a release agent to the master mold.

  3. Surround the master with a coaming, ensuring a 2-4cm gap and treating the coaming with a release agent.

  4. Pour the prepared silicone into the mold space, covering the master completely.

  5. Place the mold in a vacuum machine to remove air bubbles.

  6. Allow the mold to cure, then remove the coaming and extract the master.

  7. Trim and finalize the silicone mold for use.

Vacuum Casting Process

After mold preparation, the product is encapsulated, fixed, and placed in a vacuum infusion machine. Air is evacuated, and raw materials are injected into the mold. Once filled, the mold is cured in an oven, and the final product is extracted. This process allows for small-batch production of prototypes and parts.

Precautions

  • Adjust curing agent dosage based on temperature to avoid brittleness or extended curing times.

  • Avoid adding silicone oil to maintain mold integrity.

  • Store molds for at least 24 hours before use for optimal performance.

  • Consider resin for hard molds if needed.

  • Silicone molds typically last 10-15 uses, with shorter lifespans for high-temperature materials.

  • Choose silicone hardness (20° or 40°) based on product size and application.

Conclusion

Vacuum casting prototyping is an efficient and cost-effective solution for small-batch production and mold making. By following the outlined steps and precautions, manufacturers can achieve high-quality prototypes and products tailored to their specific industry needs. Whether for automotive parts, medical devices, or consumer electronics, vacuum casting offers a reliable method for product development and replication.
